Grigor Dimitrov is a professional tennis player, born and rised in Haskovo, Bulgaria. He started playing tennis at the age of 3. His best career ranking is number 3 achieved after the win on the World ATP Finals 2017 in London. Since he was a child, he showed the needed potential to be a talented tennis player. His first major title was won when he was just 14 years old (the European Championship U14). Two times winner of the Orange Bowl and once Eddie Herr International. But the biggest victory from his youth years was the victory in the Wimbledon in 2008 when on the final he outclassed Henri Kontinen, who is currently one very successful doubles player. As a junior he succeed in taking the First spot in the Rankings in 2009 and later after this he ended his junior career to turn pro.
Officially, his professional career started in 2008 when he was just 17 years old. His first ATP game was in Ordina Open in Netherlands, where he lost from Igor Andreev. He used to play a lot of futures and some titles was won by that time. But the real breakthrough was done in 2009 when he competed in the strong tournament in Rotherdam. There he faced on the quarter-finals Rafael Nadal and was very close to upset him, after leading with a set and a break but then Nadal come back and took the win. Grisho as he is called very often won his first ATP Title in Stockholm in 2013 on the age of 22. His performance on this tournament was more than good as on the final he won against David Ferrer who was playing incredible tennis by that time.
Then one of the most successful years for Dimitrov was 2014 where he won 3 titles and played on the Semi-Finals of the Wimbledon. In Bucharest where he got a wild card, he won the title after winning against Lukas Rosol in the final. Before that, he managed to win the title in Acapulco (his best trophy by that time) and in Queen’s in London. And then his best performance on the Grand Slam tournaments – Semi-Finalist on Wimbledon as he defeated Andy Murray (the defending champion) with 3-0 sets, later defeated by Novak Djokovic with 3-1 sets after 2 played tie-breaks and a lot of missed chances. Till the end of the year nothing special happened to him as he unsuccessfully defended his title in Stockholm, reaching the final but losing it from Tomas Berdych.
In the next two years, nothing significant happened to Grigor Dimitrov. He struggled to find the motivation and his shape to achieve something more and he split with his coach by that time – Roger Rasheed. Still no immediate miracle happened and in 2015, nothing much occurred. But with the new coach Franko David he won another title in Brisbane 2016. Then a few momentous episodes of incredible tennis and this was all. In 2017 he started the season fantastic as in Australian Open he used to play his second Grand Slam semi-final, this time against Rafael Nadal. They competed for more than 4 hours but after all Nadal again come back and won with 3-2 sets. We can honestly say that this was his best Grand Slam match ever in his entire career. Then a few titles was won as well including the Masters in Cincinnati (his first Master title). He won the home tournament in his Bulgaria (Sofia Open) and then fully deserved he played for the first time in the Nitto ATP Finals in London and WON it. Rafael Nadal was in his group but he was forced to drop due to an injury and Dimitrov had no problems in winning the group and then the tournament with 2-1 sets against David Goffin in the final. With this success he achieved number 3 world ranking (his best at the moment).
Definitely, Grigor Dimitrov is one of the most talented and interesting players in the ATP tour. But during the years his fans started believing that he will never become a world number one, winning a Grand Slam even. Still, he is one of the best athletes in the tour, and recently he was chosen in a ranking amost the most talented and pretty players in the tour, playing at the moment. He used to have a relationship with Maria Sharapova, now he is dating Nicole Scherzinger. His coach is Danny Valverdu and from October 2018, Andre Agassi joined his team so he can help him with the motivation and the execution of some of his weak shots. Still Grigor is young and there is lots he can show us and the best is yet to come.
