15 years of boycotting the tournament and in subsequent four years this is the second time Serena Williams misses this tournament. In 2017 the reason was her pregnancy, but this year the reason is ilness.

After the epic win a few days ago Williams started the game well with score 3:0 over her opponent Garbine Muguruza. But after the good start Williams’s form dropped dramaticaly which led to dropping six consecutive games and dropping the set with 6:3 for Muguruza. Between sets the american player called for a trainer and then got out for the first game of the second set and lost it. Soon after that Williams walked out of the game.

“By the score, it might have looked like I started well, but I was not feeling at all well physically,” Williams said in a statement distributed by tournament officials.”Before the match, I did not feel great and then it just got worse with every second; extreme dizziness and extreme fatigue,” Williams said. “I will focus on getting better and start preparing for Miami.”
