WTA Final in Singapore 2018 Favourites

The tournament that receives the most attention is the WTA finals in Singapore. The eight best ladies of the calendar year play the unofficial world champion. After, or maybe even next to, the Grand Slam tournaments, it’s the biggest media hype and highest prestige event. However, two very big names will not be in the game this year: Serena Williams ended her season a few weeks ago. In the short term, world number one Simona Halep had to cancel her participation due to injury.

With Petra Kvitova and last year’s winner Caroline Wozniacki, only two women are at the start, who can already triumph at the WTA finals. Rarely has the field been more balanced than this year. All eight women, who will be on the Hartcourt in Kallang at the start, can certainly hope for the overall victory. From the German point of view, Angelique Kerber hopes that her first big hit will succeed. According to the betting odds, the newly crowned winner of the US Open, Naomi Osaka, is the easy favourite on her debut.

The favourites at the 2018 WTA finals in Singapore

Caroline Wozniacki
Ranking in the world rankings: 1st
position in the seedling: 2.

Caroline Wozniacki has long been part of the tennis circus. In January, she won a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career with the Australian Open and was basically almost sure of the WTA finals. In the summer she still won on grass in Eastbourne. She won her third tournament victory of the year in early October at the Masters in Beijing. Thus, the 28-year old seems to be well prepared to defend her title this year. After all, the Dane with the recommendation of the last six victories in series in the WTA finals and has just put their good form to the test. She is sure to be one of the big favourites in this tournament, although this year she has only 3: 3 wins against the rivals in the WTA finals.

Angelique Kerber
Ranking in the world rankings: 3rd
position in the seedling: 1.

After Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber was the most successful player this year. The highlight, of course, was the triumph in Wimbledon, which made her a legend of German tennis. However, this success was also a minor curse for the number three in the world. Since then, she has not reached quarter-finals at a WTA tournament. Kerber does not travel to Singapore in the best condition. Nevertheless, she wants to get everything out of herself to be successful in her fifth participation in the WTA finals. Counterproductive could be the short-term separation of coach Wim Fissette. Kerber is now being looked after by Andre Wiesler in Singapore. Their record against the other participants in Singapore, however, is clearly expandable with only 3: 6 victories this year. Although Angelique Kerber is in the first place, she is unlikely to be the favourite.

Naomi Osaka
Ranking in the world rankings: 4th
position in the seedling: 3.

The Japanese Ace is the shooting star of the ending tennis year. Already in March, she hinted that she owned the future when the 21-year-old won the Masters in Indian Wells. The breakthrough to the world top succeeded but in September, when she triumphed at the US Open. The scandal final against Serena Williams should be the tennis fans in the best memory. For her young years, he is already very mature. Above all, she is known for playing excellent angles and thus wearing down her opponents. However, she will have to prove that she is not a bit nervous on her debut at the WTA finals. But who can insist in Flushing Meadows, should not get nervous at the finals? After the US Open, Naomi Osaka was in the final of Tokyo and in the semi-finals of Beijing. So the form still seems to be right.

Karolina Pliskova
Ranking in the world rankings: 5th
position in the seedling: 7.

It was not the best year of Karolina Pliskova. Although she won at the tournaments in Stuttgart and recently also in Tokyo, in the big tournaments, she has not been able to fully call their potential. Therefore, the Czech was up to the very last on the edge, even at the finals to be there. Now she is allowed to get involved, but she is one of the outsiders, even if she is well able to win in a good week. In Tianjin, the Czech was still in the final in early October. In the past week, she has tried to get in Moscow, the last points for the WTA finals, but lost in the second round against the veteran Vera Zvonareva. We consider Karolina Pliskova to be a bit of a surprise bag that seems to be possible in Singapore.

Elina Svitolina
Ranking in the world rankings: 6th
position in the seedling: 6.

Elina Svitolina has also experienced better years. It was almost perfect until mid-May when she had already triumphed in Brisbane, Dubai and Rome. After that, the shape curve went down significantly. It is also striking that the Ukrainian could not convince at the Grand Slam tournaments this year. The quarter-final at the Australian Open was the best result. Last 24 years was not in good shape. She could hardly win a match on the Asian tour. Maybe that’s why she is not the first contender for the tournament in Singapore, but like all the other ladies Elina Svitolina has to be on the list. It would not be a surprise if the Ukrainian received the winner’s check at the end.

Petra Kvitova
Ranking in the world rankings: 7th
position in the seedling: 4.

We did not necessarily have bets on Petra Kvitova returning from a robbery after her hand injury. In 2018, however, the Czech returned, as if it had not happened. With five tournament victories, Petra Kvitova has won the most individual titles this season. She had her ticket to the WTA finals weeks ago in her pocket. However, she has had problems at the big tournaments this season. Nevertheless, we also trust her in Singapore to play a good role, because even if in early November, the final in the Fed Cup against the United States is imminent, she will see the WTA finals not only to stabilize their form. In 2011, she won this tournament once and in 2015 in the final. The necessary experience will definitely bring her.

Sloane Stephens
Ranking in the World Ranking: 8th
position in the seedling list: 5.

Sloane Stephens made a name for herself with her victory at the US Open last year. The way to the top of the world rankings seemed to be only a matter of time, but it still lacks the necessary consistency. Good results alternate too often with weaker games. After all, the American could win the Masters tournament in Miami this season and was also at the French Open and the Masters in Montreal in the final. The bottom line is that she’s still on her way to following in the footsteps of Serena Williams. At the age of 25, Sloane Stephens is no longer a newcomer. The Asia tour was not very successful in recent weeks. In Tokyo and Wuhan, she failed already in the first round. The last time in Beijing, the US girl did not get beyond the round of 16.

Kiki Bertens
ranking in the world rankings: 10th
position in the seedling: 8.

Kiki Bertens qualifies for the WTA finals for the first time, at least in singles. Last year she was in the final of the finals in doubles. So she knows the atmosphere in Singapore. However, she was almost completely damned to watch because Kiki Bertens was really only the first follower. When Simona Halep had to cancel, the Dutchwoman was then in the field. An exclamation point has set her this year with the tournament victory in Cincinnati. She also won in Charleston and in Seoul in September. Perhaps Kiki Bertens is to be expected, even if she has set the dress rehearsal at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow in the sand and lost in their opening match against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich. So she was actually out of the draw for the final tickets, but now she is still there.

A balanced forecast before the WTA finals is really very difficult. All eight of the women who will race in Singapore have every chance of winning the title. Before the 2018 WTA finals in Singapore, betting odds show that this tournament was rarely balanced by the level of the players. Angelique Kerber, we do not trust the victory but rather. After her Wimbledon victory, she has lost a bit of sport and has now separated from her trainer. We also see Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina as outsiders. Sloane Stephens probably does not belong to the closest circle of title contenders.

We can imagine that Naomi Osaka, as well as the two former winners Petra Kvitova and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, make up the title. These three ladies have recently proven to be the strongest form players. The bookmakers take this fact into account with the odds offered. Now it will have to show whether years of experience or youthful carefreeness prevail. After winning the tournament in Beijing, Caroline Wozniacki will travel to the finals with great confidence. Probably we would decide to place our bets on attractive odds of up to 6.00 on a Danish triumph.
